John Clites is a US citizen who went expat in 2008. He currently resides in Brazil, where he teaches English, principally online, and writes.
Although John has lived in several places, his first memories are from North Carolina, and he still considers himself a Tarheel. But he also lived in Iowa from ages 7 to 14, South Carolina during high school, and in southern florida for several years as well.
John’s principle passion in life is travel. He has visited 49 of the 50 states (Alaska awaits!), most of the Canadian provinces, and approximately 30 foreign countries. John is currently based in Brazil, but he plans to get on the road again in 2019.
John’s passion for travel began at an early age. Both his parents were university professors who typically had summers free. The family often would pile into the car to explore the US. John loved seeing new places. He later explored Canada and Mexico with his father, and after graduating from college began exploring abroad.
Education: John attended public primary and secondary schools. He graduated from Duke University (Durham, NC) with a BS in Psychology and later earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Before going expat in 2008, John earned a TEFL teaching certificate.
Professional: John has worked in various fields, including apparel manufacturing, banking, consulting, and software. He does not miss the corporate world.
English teaching: John focuses on teaching English online to adults. He assesses each new students and develops a program of study targeted at each particular student. If you or someone you know is looking for an experienced English teacher, you can learn more here.
Writing: For the past several years, John has written articles as a sideline. Most of his articles focus on teaching English or Brazil. He has written for International Living, Transitions Abroad, Live and Invest Overseas, and Expat.com. His own favorite piece, about downsizing before going expat, was republished in The Huffington Post. John used to maintain a blog, John in Brazil; although he no longer maintains the blog, visitors may still read old posts. Stay tuned: John plans to launch a new blog in late 2018…
Online course: John began teaching online early in 2012. He found that it presented many advantages compared to traditional face-to-face teaching, and migrated toward teaching principally online. He realized that teaching online could be a great full-time or part-time way for retirees, stay-at-home moms, university students, recent grads, digital nomads, and others to earn money while making a positive difference in the lives of their students. So he created “How to teach English online…from anywhere,” hosted on Teachable.com.
Social media: John limits his presence on social media, but does have a personal Facebook profile and a Facebook page for his Teach English online course. John may be contacted through Facebook or via email by writing to contact@howtoteachenglishonline.net.
Favorite quote (often attributed to Mark Twain):
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
